Sir:-
With reference to your despatch No.4 Consular of
the 25th of March, I have the honour to report that I
telegraphed to you on the 22nd ultimo that a great
many more destitute Hindoos were arriving here and
that further large numbers might be expected; and I
asked what could be done under the circumstances.
At the same time I telegraphed to the Governor of
Hong Kong, requesting His Excellency to do his utmost
to put a stop to the emigration of Hindoos from his
Colony for Peru, to which he replied that he would give
publicity to the fact that no suitable work could be
found for them here and he suggested, as the best reme-
dy, the issue of an Order by the Peruvian Government
prohibiting them from landing on this Coast.
Upon this advice I visited the Minister for For-
eign Affairs and consulted with him upon the subject.
